Journal passphrases: what we can and cannot recover

Your passphrase is the key to your journal. We cannot reset it in a way that recovers your words.

Last reviewed August 20, 2026

Your journal’s encryption key is derived from your passphrase (or your account password), in your browser. Feason never has the key.

That design has a hard consequence, and we’d rather you hear it plainly: if the passphrase is lost, the entries it protects cannot be decrypted — by us or by anyone. There is no back door, which is exactly why the journal is trustworthy.

So choose a passphrase you’ll remember (it must be at least 6 characters), and consider keeping it in a password manager. If you’re locked out, contact us and we’ll help with whatever is possible for your account — but we cannot bring back words we were never able to read.
