Life and Historical Setting

Romero was regarded as cautious when appointed archbishop in 1977. The murder of priest Rutilio Grande and mounting testimony from rural communities sharpened his public confrontation with disappearances, torture, and killing.12

Work and Contribution

His broadcast homilies documented abuses, interpreted Scripture, called armed groups and government to conversion, and appealed to soldiers not to obey orders to kill. He was murdered at the altar in 1980.23

Reception and Influence

Catholic recognition moved from local martyr devotion to canonization in 2018. Christians and human-rights movements worldwide remember him as a pastor who listened to the poor.34

Romero was not simply a party ideologue, nor was he politically neutral; he criticized violence from different actors while focusing on state repression. Claims about a sudden conversion obscure earlier pastoral concern and gradual development.41
