Gutiérrez served in Peru amid urban poverty, political upheaval, grassroots Christian communities, and the reforms surrounding Vatican II and the Latin American bishops' Medellín conference.12

Work and Contribution

He described theology as critical reflection on Christian practice and argued that salvation includes liberation from sin and unjust social structures. The preferential option for the poor centers poor people as agents, not merely recipients of charity.23

Reception and Influence

His work helped establish Latin American liberation theology and influenced Catholic social teaching and ecumenical theology. Vatican scrutiny led to clarification and revision but not formal condemnation of Gutiérrez.34

Debate concerns Marxist social analysis, political violence, class, ecclesial authority, and the relation between spiritual and historical liberation. His long career cannot be reduced to slogans from one early edition.45
