Life and Historical Setting

Raised in segregated Florida, Thurman studied at Morehouse and Rochester, traveled to India, and met Gandhi. He served at Howard University, founded an intentionally interracial congregation in San Francisco, and became dean at Boston University.12

Work and Contribution

He interpreted Jesus from the underside of power, examining fear, deception, hatred, and love among people whose backs are against the wall. Contemplation for Thurman sustained social transformation rather than escape.23

Reception and Influence

Martin Luther King Jr. and other movement leaders read Thurman, and his mentorship networks connected spirituality with nonviolent struggle. Contemporary readers increasingly recognize his importance beyond the label of behind-the-scenes influence.34

Evidence, Debate, and Interpretation

Thurman's emphasis on inward renewal has sometimes been contrasted with direct activism, but his institutional work and racial analysis complicate that split. His encounter with Gandhi belongs within a broader transnational exchange.41
