Life and Historical Setting

Born Isabella Baumfree in Dutch-speaking New York, she escaped slavery with an infant and successfully sued for the return of her illegally sold son. In 1843 she adopted the name Sojourner Truth and became an itinerant preacher.12

Work and Contribution

Truth addressed slavery, gender, poverty, war, and the Bible through speeches, songs, testimony, photographs, and strategic self-presentation. She recruited Black soldiers and advocated land and resources for freedpeople.23

Reception and Influence

Her Akron speech became famous as “Ain't I a Woman?”, but the best-known dialect version was published years later by Frances Gage and does not match Truth's Dutch-accented speech. Earlier reporting preserves a different form.34

Evidence, Debate, and Interpretation

Truth moved through Methodist, perfectionist, and communal religious settings, including one marked by scandal. Her theology and politics developed, resisting a tidy modern label.41
