Life and Historical Setting

Born into a Sikh family, Sundar Singh described a crisis and vision of Christ that led to baptism despite family opposition. He traveled through India, Tibet, and abroad without founding a denomination.12

Work and Contribution

His parables and addresses emphasized prayer, suffering, direct experience, and Christ in imagery accessible to South Asian hearers. His sadhu identity challenged assumptions that Christianity required European culture.23

Reception and Influence

He became internationally famous as an emblem of indigenous Christianity and influenced Indian and Western readers. Stories of Himalayan journeys and hidden Christian communities expanded around him.34

Evidence, Debate, and Interpretation

He disappeared during a 1929 journey toward Tibet and his fate is unknown. Some miracle and travel claims depend on hagiographic retelling, and his popularity was partly constructed by Western audiences seeking an “Eastern mystic.”41
