Immigration and Healthcare Experience

Marianne Cope was born in the German lands and grew up in the United States. She entered the Sisters of St. Francis and gained experience in hospital administration before traveling to Hawaiʻi. That preparation is central to her story. Her contribution involved professional judgment, organization, and supervision as well as the personal compassion highlighted in devotional accounts.12

Responding to the Hawaiian Request

In 1883 Cope led sisters to the Hawaiian Islands to help with healthcare and related institutions. Their work developed within a government system that separated people diagnosed with Hansen’s disease from their families. Understanding the setting requires attention to medical uncertainty and public policy, alongside the religious reasons the sisters gave for accepting the assignment.12

Kalaupapa and the Bishop Home

Cope later worked at Kalaupapa, where the sisters cared for women and girls at the Bishop Home and took on additional responsibilities. The work continued beyond Damien’s death. Giving that chronology proper attention restores women’s institutional leadership to a history often told mainly through one male missionary. Residents and local workers also remained active participants in the community’s life.12

January 23 and Later Recognition

Cope died in 1918 and was canonized in 2012. Her U.S. Catholic commemoration is January 23. The biography prepared for her 2005 beatification naturally calls her Blessed; that reflects its publication date rather than her current Catholic status. Reading sources with their dates prevents older titles from producing an inaccurate account of the later canonization.123
