John of Damascus

Arabic-speaking Christian monk and theologian known for a systematic exposition of doctrine, hymnography, and defense of icons.
Life and Historical Setting
John was born under Umayyad rule in Damascus, probably into a Christian family associated with fiscal administration, and later became a monk at Mar Saba. Much traditional biography is late and includes legendary detail.
Work and Contribution
The Fount of Knowledge organizes philosophical terms, catalogs teachings judged erroneous, and presents an Exact Exposition of Christian faith. During Byzantine iconoclasm he defended images by appealing to the incarnation and distinguishing veneration from worship.
Reception and Influence
The Seventh Ecumenical Council's defense of icons helped secure his lasting authority in Orthodox Christianity. Catholic tradition later named him a Doctor of the Church, and his hymns remain in worship.
