A Young Woman from Lourdes

Bernadette grew up in a family facing severe poverty at Lourdes in southwestern France. In 1858 she reported a series of encounters with a woman at the grotto of Massabielle. Her age, social position, and limited schooling became important features of later accounts. They provide context for her testimony, rather than independent proof or disproof of its supernatural interpretation.1

Testimony and Church Investigation

Her reports generated questioning by civic and religious authorities and eventually Catholic approval of the Lourdes apparition tradition. Historical study can examine the testimony, investigations, and growth of the shrine. Whether an apparition was a supernatural event is a further religious judgment. The profile identifies the Catholic conclusion without presenting it as a conclusion shared by all Christian traditions.12

Life at Nevers

Bernadette later entered the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, where she spent her remaining years in religious community while facing continuing ill health. This period matters because her life did not end with the public events of 1858. Accounts focused only on the grotto can obscure the years of ordinary responsibilities, prayer, and sickness that followed.1

April 16 and the French Calendar

Bernadette died on April 16, 1879, and was canonized in 1933. April 16 is a common commemoration, while the French calendar honors her on February 18. These are liturgical observances rather than competing death dates. Her later reception belongs to the history of Lourdes and Catholic devotion, with reported healings requiring their own evidence rather than automatic attribution to her biography.12
