Energetic line drawings accompany the Psalms in this Carolingian manuscript. Rather than merely decorating a book, the images turn poetic language into scenes that invite comparison between reading, prayer, and visual interpretation.

Historical setting
Utrecht University associates the Psalter with ninth-century Reims or Hautvillers, while acknowledging uncertainties about date, patronage, and individual scenes. It later traveled to England, influenced other illustrated psalters, and entered the Utrecht library in 1716. Earlier Northumbrian Gospel leaves were bound with it during a later stage of its history.
Observe before interpreting
Look closely
Read a psalm before its illustration: which expressions become figures, actions, or landscapes?
Separate the ninth-century Psalter from the older Gospel fragments later bound into the volume.
History, Scripture, and theology
Why it matters
The manuscript shows how medieval Christians interpreted an inherited Jewish collection of poems through their own visual world. Reading Psalm 23 offers a contextual starting point for comparing words and images, while the whole Psalter invites attention to lament, judgment, and praise. Different parts of one bound object may have very different origins.
What the record can establish
Evidence and limits
Proposed workshop, patron, and individual visual meanings are not equally certain; the date is approximate.
The drawings document a medieval reading of the Psalms, not the appearance of the biblical events or people themselves.
