Historical setting

Recovered from Qumran Cave 1 in the twentieth century, the scroll belongs to a Jewish manuscript collection. The Israel Museum dates it approximately to 125 BCE. Read it first within Jewish scribal and interpretive history, before asking how later Christians received Isaiah.

Observe before interpreting

Look closely

  • Follow the columns and joins: how did the maker organize a text too long for one sheet?
  • Compare a correction with the surrounding writing before drawing conclusions about what changed.

History, Scripture, and theology

Why it matters

The scroll lets students compare an early witness with later Hebrew textual traditions. Its importance includes differences as well as continuities. Isaiah 40 supplies a contextual reading connection: it opens questions about consolation and the transmission of prophetic writing, rather than making this manuscript evidence for a particular later interpretation.

What the record can establish

Evidence and limits

  • This is a Jewish manuscript, not a Christian document or a witness written by Isaiah himself.
  • The approximate copying date does not date the composition of every passage or settle Jewish–Christian interpretive disagreements.
