Historical setting
The Walters dates the manuscript to the first half of the sixteenth century and associates it with Gunda Gunde through painting style and handwriting. Later documentation places it at an Ethiopian church; its subsequent move into European private ownership is not fully explained. The original wooden boards preserve another part of its early material life.
Observe before interpreting
Look closely
Compare an evangelist portrait, a decorated headpiece, and a canon table: how does each guide a reader differently?
Look at the wooden-board binding and ask what a digital page cannot convey about holding or using the book.
History, Scripture, and theology
Why it matters
The book invites learners to encounter Ethiopian Christianity as a source of theological and artistic creativity. Mark 1 supplies a contextual starting point for comparing Gospel text with the manuscript’s visual organization. Its canon tables also show that readers studied relationships between the Gospels long before digital cross-references.
What the record can establish
Evidence and limits
The workshop attribution and approximate date depend on scholarly comparison rather than a modern timestamp.
The museum records gaps in acquisition history; present custody does not explain every step of removal from its Ethiopian setting.
